LMAX Eyes $5 Billion Valuation in Strategic Review

While a Nasdaq IPO stands as the preferred route for the company, advisers are evaluating a spectrum of paths, including a direct sale, a merger with a special purpose acquisition company, or a listing in Europe. No final timeline exists; LMAX maintains a robust revenue stream from its established foreign exchange operations, shielding it from the immediate necessity of tapping public markets during periods of volatility in the cryptocurrency sector.

A $5 billion valuation would represent a fivefold increase since July 2021, when private equity firm J.C. Flowers acquired a 30% stake in the group. Since then, LMAX has aggressively expanded its institutional infrastructure, recently launching a 24/7 multi-asset exchange and a hosted portal, Kiosk, to integrate custody, collateral management, and trading. The firm’s strategic shift has been bolstered by a $150 million investment from Ripple, aimed at increasing the institutional utility of the RLUSD stablecoin. As Morgan Stanley and KBW weigh these options, the firm remains focused on its core agency execution model, which provides regulated venues for banks, hedge funds, and asset managers seeking exposure to both traditional and tokenized instruments.
