Democrats decry State Department report on Cuba as McCarthyite overreach

The 100-page report, titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism,” alleges that the Cuban government has recruited generations of American activists to undermine national security. It explicitly names several individuals and organizations—including commentator Hasan Piker and the National Lawyers Guild—who have publicly opposed the White House’s ongoing oil blockade of the island. Critics argue the administration is weaponizing federal power to target domestic political dissenters under the guise of national security.

Rep. Omar, alongside colleagues including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, vowed to utilize congressional oversight powers to challenge these characterizations. The lawmakers contend that advocacy for peaceful foreign policy remains a protected activity under the First Amendment. They further argued that the administration’s broader strategy, which has included efforts to deport student protesters and label anti-fascist organizers as terrorists, signals an escalating campaign against civil society. Omar described the administration's current trajectory as an intensification of economic warfare that inflicts severe humanitarian costs on the Cuban population.
