Tina Smith Backs El-Sayed as Michigan Primary Fundraising Gap Widens

Smith, a Minnesota Democrat, becomes the fourth senator to align with El-Sayed, joining Bernie Sanders, Chris Van Hollen, and Elizabeth Warren. In a social media endorsement, she framed the choice as a battle between candidates who pacify big money and those willing to challenge the status quo. She specifically cited El-Sayed’s support for Medicare for All and his refusal to accept corporate PAC funds as evidence of his commitment to building a sustainable, voter-driven movement.

New filings from the Federal Election Commission underscore this divide. Between July 1 and July 15, El-Sayed raised over $2.3 million from individual donors, significantly outpacing Stevens’ $921,000. While El-Sayed dominates among small-dollar contributors, Stevens remains competitive through the intervention of super PACs. The United Democracy Project, an arm of AIPAC, has poured nearly $20 million into the race, supplemented by an additional $14 million from the group A Stronger Michigan.

This influx of outside capital has sparked debate regarding Stevens' long-term viability. Political analysts suggest that should Stevens advance to the general election, her reliance on these groups could prove a liability if donors pivot toward Republican Mike Rogers. As Oakland University professor David Dulio noted, the contest has effectively become a high-stakes referendum on the future of the Democratic Party, forcing voters to choose between institutional funding and a grassroots-led platform.
