Coinbase enables USDC payments for autonomous AI agents

The rollout leverages Coinbase’s native x402 support, an open standard that utilizes the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response to facilitate automated settlements. By integrating this into the Coinbase Developer Platform, the company allows businesses to receive, reconcile, and cash out payments from agents without the friction of human intervention. Because these transactions occur on-chain via stablecoins, they eliminate traditional chargeback risks for merchants.

Beyond payment processing, Coinbase has upgraded its agent-focused trading platform with real-time market data and conditional execution commands. Users can now set specific guardrails—such as automatic sell-offs triggered when Bitcoin prices dip below a threshold—allowing agents to manage portfolios and financial workflows autonomously. The update arrives as major platforms, including Amazon’s Bedrock AgentCore, increasingly adopt the x402 standard to enable services that machines can discover and purchase on their own. While the current rollout is limited to regions like the U.S. and Singapore, it marks a shift toward standardizing how software interacts with financial infrastructure.
