Crypto Industry Generates 232,000 U.S. Jobs and $55 Billion in GDP

Crypto Industry Generates 232,000 U.S. Jobs and $55 Billion in GDP

The analysis, conducted by Pragmatic Policy Group, distinguishes between direct employment and broader economic impact. While crypto companies themselves account for 34,000 full-time equivalent roles—led by software and blockchain engineering—the remaining 198,000 positions are sustained through supplier networks and worker spending. This multiplier effect suggests that every direct hire in the sector supports roughly six jobs in industries ranging from cloud services and legal consulting to local hospitality.

Economic contributions appear concentrated in specific regions. California and New York serve as the primary hubs, hosting a combined 111,415 supported positions. Texas, Washington, and North Carolina round out the top tier of employment impact. Across all these roles, the report estimates an average annual wage of $133,000, significantly higher than the national median of $64,000.

These figures arrive during a volatile period for individual firm hiring. Recent workforce reductions at companies like Exodus and Polygon Labs highlight the disparity between direct payroll headcounts and the broader economic modeling used in the study. Because the Bureau of Economic Analysis does not recognize cryptocurrency as a standalone industry, researchers mapped sector revenue into existing classifications like securities and data processing to estimate the total footprint. NCA President Stuart Alderoty cited the findings as evidence of the sector's long-term viability as a pillar of American economic growth.
