UN Overwhelmingly Votes to End Cuba Embargo Amid Hurricane Crisis

The resolution carries no binding authority over Washington, where only Congress holds the power to dismantle the long-standing sanctions. Yet, the symbolic rebuke arrived at a critical juncture, as 735,000 Cubans were forced to evacuate their homes due to one of the strongest Atlantic storms on record. The International Peoples' Assembly warned that the hurricane is currently exacerbating the structural and economic fragility caused by decades of isolation.

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez condemned the blockade as a policy of collective punishment, telling the assembly that the measure systematically violates human rights. Latin American diplomats echoed this sentiment, framing the sanctions as an act of economic warfare. Venezuelan ambassador Samuel Moncada argued that the policy aims to subdue an entire population through hunger and disease, while Colombian ambassador Leonor Zalabata praised Cuba as a vital partner in regional peace efforts. Despite the near-unanimous international consensus, the US maintains its position, leaving the island nation to navigate the aftermath of the storm under the continued weight of the embargo.
