Trump administration weighs crackdown on Chinese AI as Kimi K3 surges

Officials are debating whether to add Chinese AI firms to the Commerce Department’s Entity List, a move that would restrict access to US technology. Previous attempts to implement such bans were sidelined by fears of hindering domestic innovation, but the rising popularity of Kimi K3 among American developers has reignited the discussion. The model's ability to offer high-level performance at lower costs has forced a re-evaluation of the current regulatory landscape.

Moonshot AI, founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, faces a complex path forward. The company recently hit infrastructure limits, temporarily halting new subscriptions after demand surged. With a valuation of $30 billion and plans for a potential Hong Kong IPO, the firm is preparing to release full model weights on July 27. This open-source strategy complicates US enforcement efforts, as developers could host the model independently of Moonshot’s own services.

David Sacks, a former White House advisor, labeled the model’s benchmark success a warning for the United States. Meanwhile, market sentiment remains skeptical of a sweeping federal ban; Polymarket traders currently assign only a 15% probability to a formal order blocking public access to major Chinese models. While the AI sector continues to draw massive capital, figures like George Noble have cautioned that the current spending boom carries risks that could surpass the volatility of the dot-com era.
