Ultra-Wealthy Lag on Estate Planning Despite Looming Transfer Wave

The BNY Wealth report, which analyzed 501 individuals with at least $10 million in investable assets, highlights a paradox: while 67 per cent of respondents express high confidence in their objectives, 53 per cent admit their planning is unfinished. Oversight is common, with more than half of the surveyed failing to review their arrangements with an advisor over the past year. Nearly a quarter have left their documents untouched for at least three years.

Complexity and Oversight

Experts point to the inherent difficulty of wealth management as a primary driver for these lapses. At the 60th Annual Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning, professionals noted that 39 per cent of families may not fully grasp their existing estate structures. Common pitfalls include improper asset titling and reliance on outdated documentation. Even as younger UHNW individuals increasingly turn to AI to navigate these complexities, advisors warn that algorithms struggle to account for nuanced family dynamics and shifting tax laws. Furthermore, anxiety persists regarding the next generation, with 42 per cent of participants fearing their heirs lack the financial literacy necessary to manage significant wealth, leaving the multi-trillion-dollar transfer process vulnerable to avoidable disruption.
