ZachXBT labels hardware wallets garbage, recommends dedicated iPhones

In a recent Telegram post, the investigator contended that frequent, unnecessary updates to Ledger’s software interface often disrupt core functionality. While his critique specifically singled out Ledger as the worst offender, it underscored a broader skepticism toward dedicated physical signing devices. He suggests that users would be better served by a dedicated iPhone, wiped of all extraneous apps and reserved exclusively for managing crypto assets.

This stance challenges the industry-standard belief that physical isolation of private keys remains the gold standard for security. Ledger, which recently rebranded its interface from Ledger Live to Ledger Wallet, maintains that its hardware provides essential protection by keeping keys offline. However, the debate highlights a persistent reality in crypto security: attackers rarely need to breach the physical hardware itself. Instead, they increasingly rely on social engineering, phishing, and fraudulent applications to trick users into compromising their own recovery phrases.

Recent history supports the idea that the greatest vulnerabilities often exist outside the hardware. In April, a malicious application masquerading as official Ledger software on Apple’s App Store successfully siphoned at least $9.5 million from unsuspecting users. Similarly, in January, a single victim lost more than $282 million in Bitcoin and Litecoin after being manipulated by scammers. These incidents demonstrate that even the most robust hardware wallet can be bypassed if the user is deceived into revealing their seed phrase. Whether a dedicated smartphone offers a superior defense remains a point of contention, as such a device still relies on the user’s ability to navigate complex operating systems and avoid sophisticated digital traps.
