UK to Launch First G7 Digital Sovereign Bond via HSBC Orion

The project will operate within the Digital Securities Sandbox, a joint regulatory testing environment managed by the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority. By moving government debt onto distributed-ledger infrastructure, the Treasury aims to slash settlement times and reduce the manual reconciliation work currently burdening traditional debt markets. HSBC, which has already facilitated over $3.5 billion in digital bond issuances, secured the mandate to operate the underlying platform.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey confirmed the central bank will integrate the digital bond, or DIGIT, into its market operations. Plans include making the instrument eligible as collateral for repurchase agreements and central bank funding transactions. While the Treasury has yet to finalize the bond’s maturity, coupon structure, or investor eligibility, officials noted that the initial issuance will remain separate from the standard gilt financing program. The move aligns with a broader push by the UK and the United States to harmonize regulations for stablecoins and cross-border tokenized assets, signaling a shift toward fully digitized financial markets.
