ICE Shooting in Maine Sparks Outcry Against Senator Susan Collins

The shooting occurred while agents were reportedly searching for another individual. Guerrero, who was authorized to work in the United States, was killed in an encounter the Department of Homeland Security described as an attempt to flee. Critics, however, have branded the official account a potential murder confession, pointing to the absence of a clear threat. The event marks the second fatal ICE shooting in six days, following the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas.

Jackson, a former Maine state Senate president currently vying to unseat Collins, leveled sharp criticism at the Republican senator for her support of legislation providing $70 billion to ICE without sufficient oversight. He argued that Collins must be held responsible for the consequences of that funding. As protests erupted outside her Biddeford office, other Democratic candidates and national figures, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, joined the chorus calling for the agency's abolition.

In response to mounting pressure, Collins announced she had urged DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to halt non-urgent vehicle stops while an investigation led by the DHS inspector general and the FBI proceeds. Critics remain unimpressed by the gesture, with primary challenger Nirav Shah dismissing the move as insufficient given the lack of structural guardrails in the funding Collins previously championed.
