Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz Following US Airstrikes

The US military struck dozens of targets across Iran over the weekend, prompting retaliatory fire against American installations in Kuwait and Bahrain. Tehran’s Foreign Ministry accused these host nations of complicity by serving as launch pads for the American campaign. In response to the bombardment, Iran declared the critical waterway closed, citing the insecurity created by the US presence. President Donald Trump dismissed the closure, claiming in a Sunday interview that the strait remains open following the strikes.

This cycle of violence has effectively rendered recent diplomatic efforts futile. The National Iranian American Council warned that the current confrontation confirms the previous peace agreement was merely a temporary pause. While UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent catastrophic economic consequences, the rhetoric from both capitals remains hardened. Tehran has openly criticized the UN’s response as unconstructive, while the Trump administration has labeled ongoing negotiations a waste of time.
