ICE Witnesses to Fatal Shooting Face Pressure to Self-Deport

Federal agents claim that Salgado Araujo, a construction worker and long-term U.S. resident, attempted to ram his vehicle into officers during a traffic stop on Tuesday, forcing an agent to open fire in self-defense. However, the three witnesses in the vehicle dispute this version of events entirely. Through their attorney, Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, they maintain that no officers were in front of the van and that gunfire erupted immediately upon the agents exiting their vehicles.

Juan Proaño, CEO of the League of United Latin American Citizens, says the men are now facing immense pressure to leave the country. David Bier of the Cato Institute and other immigration policy experts have highlighted discrepancies in the official account, noting that visual evidence shows no damage to the front of the van—a detail that contradicts the assertion that the vehicle was used as a weapon. With the witnesses held separately, their consistent testimonies have drawn attention from advocates who argue the deportation effort is an attempt to silence the only people capable of refuting the government's account.
