The victims included a dual U.S.-Canadian citizen, as well as nationals from Australia, Poland, and the United Kingdom, alongside a Palestinian staffer identified as Saif Abu Taha. World Central Kitchen CEO Erin Gore condemned the strike as unforgivable, noting that the convoy’s movements were coordinated with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to ensure safety in what was designated a deconflicted zone. The group has since suspended its operations in the region.
While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the deaths as an unintentional hit on innocent people, reports from Haaretz suggest the strike was launched over suspicions that a militant was traveling with the convoy. This incident follows a pattern of attacks on aid personnel, including staff from the United Nations and Doctors Without Borders, during the ongoing conflict. Founder José Andrés demanded an end to the killing of civilians and aid workers, stating that the Israeli government must stop using food as a weapon of war. In response, international leaders, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, have demanded full accountability for the tragedy.
