Republican Senators Break Ranks Over DOJ Probe Into Jerome Powell

Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) have declared they will withhold support for any Federal Reserve confirmation, including the upcoming chair vacancy, until the probe is resolved. Murkowski, following a direct conversation with Powell, characterized the inquiry as a blatant attempt at coercion designed to force the Fed into shifting its monetary policy. With the administration holding a slim margin in the Senate, the stance taken by these lawmakers poses a significant legislative hurdle.

The pushback extends to a bipartisan coalition of former economic officials, including Alan Greenspan, Ben Bernanke, and Janet Yellen. In a joint statement, the group warned that using prosecutorial power to influence the central bank mirrors the practices of emerging markets with fragile institutions. They cautioned that compromising the independence of the Federal Reserve risks severe consequences for national inflation and long-term economic stability.

The tension stems from months of pressure exerted by President Donald Trump, who has publicly demanded more aggressive interest rate cuts to address a struggling labor market. Powell has resisted these demands, citing the inflationary risks posed by the administration's tariff policies. As the May deadline for the Fed chair transition approaches, the conflict between the executive branch and the central bank has moved from policy disputes to an open legal confrontation.
