Luke Dashjr Rejects Calls to Scrap Bitcoin Data Proposal BIP-110

BIP-110, formally titled the Reduced Data Temporary Softfork, seeks to restrict arbitrary data storage by invalidating specific transaction methods at the consensus level. Dashjr maintains that the proposal is essential to steer Bitcoin back toward its original utility as a medium of exchange. The rules would apply exclusively to UTXOs created after activation, ensuring that older assets remain unaffected.

Critics argue that restricting transaction content sets a dangerous precedent, potentially fragmenting the network by imposing subjective rules on block space. While supporters characterize Ordinals and Runes as spam that inflates storage demands, opponents contend that the network should remain neutral, processing any transaction for users willing to pay the required fees.

The debate has gained momentum following recent comments by Michael Saylor, who advocated for a slow, conservative approach to Bitcoin’s evolution. Although Saylor did not explicitly endorse the proposal, Dashjr cited the silence as further justification to proceed. With no central authority to dictate protocol changes, the future of BIP-110 rests on the decentralized consensus of miners, node operators, and businesses. Current reports indicate tepid support among miners, leaving the proposal’s activation status uncertain as the industry grapples with broader market volatility.
