Shielded Labs Weighs Zcash Ironwood Delay Amid Technical Transition

The Ironwood upgrade aims to resolve the Orchard “infinity” bug, a vulnerability that theoretically allowed for the creation of counterfeit ZEC. By introducing a new shielded pool and an accounting checkpoint, the protocol intends to verify that the circulating supply remains within intended limits. While developers confirm no evidence exists of the flaw being exploited, the upgrade remains a critical step in restoring confidence in the network's shielded transactions.

Infrastructure providers currently face the complex task of replacing zcashd with the Z3 suite, which includes Zebra, Zaino, and Zallet. According to official migration guidance, some legacy features lack direct replacements, forcing operators to overhaul their internal systems. With components like Zallet and Zaino still under development, some participants have requested more time for deployment and testing. Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox noted that while security reviews of the new implementation have been positive, the community continues to deliberate on whether to postpone the late July activation to ensure a stable transition.
