GOP Lawmakers Reap Campaign Cash From Corporate Tax-Break Beneficiaries

The analysis highlights seven House Republicans who supported the budget package, focusing on the financial feedback loop between corporate beneficiaries and their legislative champions. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa, for instance, has accepted at least $57,000 from PACs representing companies like Amazon, Walmart, and 3M. These firms gained significant advantages from a provision in the law allowing for immediate investment write-offs. Amazon, which saw its effective federal tax rate drop to 1.37% following the legislation, remains a key contributor to the lawmakers who enabled these savings.

Legislators like Rob Bresnahan of Pennsylvania face similar scrutiny. The report notes that Bresnahan received $2,500 from FirstEnergy, a utility company that secured $500 million in depreciation deductions through the same law, even as the company raised prices for his own constituents. Investigators also noted that Bresnahan held stock in every company that contributed to his campaign after the bill passed, raising questions regarding the alignment of private financial interests with public policy decisions. Leor Tal, campaign director for Unrig Our Economy, characterized the trend as a direct trade-off where vulnerable Americans lost essential health and food support to finance tax breaks for profitable corporations.
