Daily life for children in the Gaza Strip has devolved into a struggle for basic survival. Beyond the 17,000 fatalities, the U.N.-sponsored Global Protection Cluster reports that over 40,000 children are living with war-related disabilities, with an average of 10 children losing one or both legs every day. These injuries are often treated in a medical system where less than half of the hospitals remain functional, frequently forcing surgeons to operate without anesthesia.
Malnutrition has reached critical levels, with UNRWA screening indicating that one in ten children suffers from acute deprivation. According to Juliette Touma, UNRWA’s director of communications, local health workers are seeing conditions once confined to medical textbooks. While more than 6,000 aid trucks sit waiting for authorization, Israeli authorities have restricted the movement of humanitarian supplies since March. This blockade, described by Human Rights Watch as a pattern of actions that may amount to crimes against humanity, prevents the delivery of food, medicine, and hygiene essentials.
The situation remains compounded by the exclusion of UNRWA staff from the territory, a decision backed by the United States following uncorroborated allegations regarding the agency's personnel. With aid infrastructure dismantled and access to clean water effectively severed, U.N. officials warn that the current trajectory will lead to further preventable deaths. Philippe Lazzarini, the UNRWA commissioner-general, has stated that any further delay in achieving a ceasefire will only accelerate the humanitarian catastrophe.
