Judge Blocks Trump’s Attempt to Rename and Close Kennedy Center

U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper issued the injunction on Friday in response to a lawsuit filed by Congresswoman Joyce Beatty. The ruling mandates the removal of the "Trump" name from the facility, stating that the original statute establishing the center is unambiguous in its intent to honor only President John F. Kennedy. Cooper emphasized that the center’s name is a legislative creation, meaning only Congress holds the power to alter it.

Beyond the naming dispute, the court blocked the planned closure of the center. Judge Cooper criticized the board of trustees for failing to independently evaluate the necessity of the shutdown, noting that the decision was based on a one-sided presentation of information. While President Trump defended the renovation as a necessary upgrade to a "dilapidated" facility, the court found the board had been derelict in its duties to consider the broader impacts on programming and the site’s status as a memorial. Trump, responding via social media, attacked the ruling as politically motivated and threatened to return oversight of the institution to Congress.
