Bernie Sanders Backs Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan Senate Seat

El-Sayed, a physician and long-time progressive ally, recently resigned his county post to launch his campaign. He is now seeking to replace retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. Sanders praised the candidate’s commitment to Medicare for All and his pledge to dismantle the current campaign finance system, describing him as a leader capable of challenging entrenched special interests.

The endorsement follows a series of joint appearances during Sanders’ nationwide Fighting Oligarchy Tour. Other prominent progressives, including Representative Ro Khanna and Georgia state Representative Ruwa Romman, have also signaled their support, citing El-Sayed’s focus on healthcare access, environmental protections, and economic reform. El-Sayed’s platform centers on breaking the political influence held by figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

While El-Sayed joins state Senator Mallory McMorrow as an early entrant in the Democratic primary, the field remains fluid. Potential contenders include Representative Haley Stevens, former state House Speaker Joe Tate, and Attorney General Dana Nessel. On the Republican side, the race is similarly crowded, with former Congressman Mike Rogers, Representative Bill Huizenga, and 2022 gubernatorial nominee Tudor Dixon among those weighing bids for the seat.
