Leaked NPS Report Warns of Health Hazards from July 4 Fireworks

The scale of the pyrotechnic event represents a roughly 50-fold increase over the typical 10,000 to 20,000 shells launched during past celebrations. Experts warn that current meteorological forecasts—predicting temperatures near 100ºF and minimal wind speeds of 5 to 8 mph—will likely trap smoke over downtown, Arlington, and Capitol Hill. Without strong breezes to disperse the particulate matter, the air quality is expected to reach levels classified as very unhealthy.

George Thurston, a professor of medicine and population health at New York University, emphasized the severity of the projected pollution. He urged residents to minimize outdoor exposure and highlighted that vulnerable populations in low-income neighborhoods face disproportionate risks from the event. The NPS recommendation to stay indoors reflects concerns that the combination of extreme heat and concentrated pollutants poses an immediate threat to public safety during the festivities.
