Majority of Americans Back Ending Private Health Insurance

The survey of 1,606 adults, conducted in late June, underscores a growing appetite for systemic change. Support for a government-run, single-payer model is particularly robust among registered Democrats, Independents, and adults under 45. In contrast, only 30% of respondents voiced opposition to the proposal, while the remainder expressed uncertainty. This public shift arrives as the administration faces scrutiny over the quiet release of data showing 4.2 million people have lost Affordable Care Act coverage since February. Combined with Medicaid and CHIP losses, estimates from Protect Our Care suggest nearly 8 million people have lost access to care during the current term.

Brad Woodhouse, president of Protect Our Care, characterized the trend as a mounting crisis for working families, who are increasingly forced to ration insulin or skip cancer screenings due to rising costs and bureaucratic hurdles. While legislative figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Debbie Dingell continue to champion the Medicare for All Act, the pollsters noted that support for a government-run system now outpaces the desire to simply expand the existing Affordable Care Act. With the midterm elections approaching, the findings suggest that healthcare access remains a defining issue, as candidates in states like Maine and Michigan increasingly tether their platforms to the promise of universal, single-payer coverage.
