Michigan Judge Halts Kalshi Sports Betting Contracts

Michigan Judge Halts Kalshi Sports Betting Contracts

The order stems from a lawsuit initiated by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who contends that Kalshi’s offerings function as unlicensed gambling products in violation of the state’s Lawful Sports Betting Act. In her decision, Judge Aquilina noted that local residents face potential harm from platforms that disguise sports betting operations as investment opportunities. This legal setback follows a federal court’s decision to remand the case back to the state level, rejecting Kalshi’s attempt to centralize the dispute under federal jurisdiction.

Michigan is now the second state to successfully secure a court-ordered restriction against the company, following a similar injunction in Nevada. The regulatory landscape remains fractured as more than a dozen states pursue enforcement actions against prediction market operators. Conversely, Kalshi maintains that the Commodity Exchange Act grants the Commodity Futures Trading Commission exclusive authority over its contracts, arguing that state-level licensing requirements create prohibitive operational costs and conflict with its mandate to provide a uniform national market. Despite these mounting legal challenges, trading volume on prediction platforms continues to hit record highs, fueled largely by the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
