KuCoin under fire following reported legal threats against theft victim

The controversy erupted after ZachXBT shared a screenshot of a communication purportedly from KuCoin’s support team. The message asserts that while the exchange respects legal channels, it reserves the right to pursue claims against individuals making what it deems false or unlawful statements. The victim, identified as DNBWIZARD, publicly ridiculed the threat on X, questioning the exchange's justification for the intimidation tactics.

At the heart of the dispute are five deposit addresses allegedly used in an Atomic Stealer incident on August 18, 2025. ZachXBT alleges these accounts utilized 'purchased mule KYC,' allowing bad actors to bypass identity verification protocols. While these claims remain unverified by court filings, they arrive as KuCoin grapples with a history of regulatory friction. In early 2025, the exchange pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, agreeing to a $297 million penalty following Department of Justice allegations that it handled billions in illicit funds without proper anti-money laundering controls.

This incident mirrors earlier findings where large-scale crypto thefts were traced to KuCoin-linked deposit addresses. Despite securing a MiCA license in Austria last year, the exchange has faced mounting resistance from European regulators, who recently restricted its ability to onboard new customers due to persistent compliance staffing failures.
